Former Korean-American entertainer Amy, who was given a deportation order two years ago after being convicted of abusing prescription drugs, reportedly attempted suicide after a Korean variety show looked into rumors about her past.

The June 19 episode of “Heard it Through the Grapevine,” which airs on Channel A, featured “problematic celebrities with well-off families who turned the entertainment industry upside down” as the main theme. “Heard it Through the Grapevine” is a variety show that discusses rumors surrounding celebrities in Korean entertainment.

During the episode, guests brought up rumors claiming that Amy borrowed 200,000 won (approximately $175) from a reporter, requested that a reporter who she met at a detention center fix her face, and that a production staff member stated she was emotionally unstable. These rumors were broadcast as part of the show without any evidence to back up their claims.

On June 20, one media outlet reported that Amy had attempted suicide in her home in Los Angeles as a result of the broadcast and was taken to hospital. The report claimed that although she was out of danger, her representatives cited the shock of having her past unfairly broadcast on the show was the cause of her action.

Amy had previously posted some concerning messages on social media, such as, “I’m so tired now. There’s nowhere to go,” and “I want to go somewhere where I can’t be sad. Then the truth will come out. I’ve forgotten how to laugh. My tears have dried. Acting strong is too difficult now. I’m giving up. The truth only comes out when someone dies. I feel bad for my family. Thank you to those who believed in me. I hope everyone will be happy.”

Later on June 20, “Heard it Through the Grapevine” issued an official apology to Amy. “We recognize that the content of the June 19 episode, where guests made comments about Amy, was deeply hurtful. Our production staff regret the incident and apologize sincerely to Amy. We hope that she will recover fully as soon as possible.”

This is not the first time that “Heard it Through the Grapevine” has been embroiled in controversy. Last year they acted as paparazzi in Singapore in order to get news on former entertainer Shin Jung Hwan and recently they were criticized by viewers for dragging an actor’s painful past into the spotlight.
